With the support of the ARCASIA, the Architectural Society China, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, and the Architects Association of Macau and in cooperation with the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Shenzhen University, the “Asian Contemporary Architecture Seminar” – “Asian Architecture” Series Forum 2 was held simultaneously online and on site at Benyuan Design and Research Center of Shenzhen University. Architect Nuno Soares, Vice-President of AAM Board of Directors, attended and served as the forum’s guest speaker.

AAM general assembly 2023 took place at its Headquarters. GA President Arch. Ben Leong chaired the meeting and delivered a speech. Describing the current difficulties encountered by the Macao architectural industry and its future development prospects, he encourages members to face it positively. BD President Christine Choi made an annual report on behalf of the board of directors. The association held many lectures and seminars for the industry in the past year; In terms of international exchanges, it participated in the 43rd Asian Architects Congress held in the Philippines and the 28th World Congress of Architects and 29th UIA Member Congress held in Copenhagen, Denmark; In terms of promoting and supporting the local architects, architectural design competitions and exhibitions were organized; In terms of community, the community project named “Go To School” were continuously carried out. Board director Mimi Cheong presented the financial report. The annual activity report and financial report introduced were passed after the President of the Supervisory Board Arch. Eddie Wong delivered the supervisory report.
The association also made the election of the new council for 2024-2025. By the unanimous approval of the members presented, Arch. Ben Leong continues to be the GA President while Arch. Carlos Marreiros and Arch. Johnathan Wong being the GA Vice-Presidents; Arch. Christine Choi is re-elected as BD President while Arch. Eddie Wong continues to be the President of Supervisory Board; Arch. Carlos Marreiros and Arch. José Maneiras continue to be the President and Vice-President of Fellow Members Council.

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations) held a press conference on the work report at the Headquarters of Macau Association of Building Constructors and Developers. Representatives of the six associations included: Eng. Eddie Joe Wu, President of the Macau Institute of Engineers; Arch. Christine Choi, BD President of the Architects Association of Macau; Eng. Leong Chi Hang, BD President of Association of Macau Engineering Consultant Companies; Eng. Vong Kock Kei, BD Vice-President of Macau Association of Building Constructors and Developers; Mr. Lo Chi Hou, BD Vice-President of Macau Construction Association; and Mr. Pun Chi Keong, Secretary- General of Macau Construction Machinery Engineering Association.
This work report mainly revealed that public works were still needed to support the survival and development of the industry in the next two to three years; the finalization of “Approval and Inspection Guidelines or Standards for Public Housing Projects” needed to be realistic; and the rate of serious injuries related to construction works has decreased in recent years. The Six Associations was planning to submit a writen opinion on the “Approval and Inspection Standards for Government Public Housing” to the Office of the Secretary for Transport and Public Works of the Macau SAR Government in December.

The award ceremony of “Open Call for Design Proposal for Public Art Installations and Public Facilities at Lai Chi Wun Shipyards Plots X11 - X15” took place at the “Cultural Heritage Protection Act Promotion Carnival” held in the garden at Nos.5 to 7, Rua de Sanches de Miranda. The award presenters included Ms. Leong Wai Man, Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Ms. Linda Wong, Vice-President for the Public Relations of Galaxy Entertainment Group; and Arch. Christine Choi, President of AAM Board of Directors. The design competition was organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, coordinated by the Architects Association of Macau, and supported by Galaxy Entertainment Group.
The list of winners: Gold Prize – Chao U Cheng; Silver Prize - Zheng Jianyi; Bronze Prize - Ngan Kin Wa. Three Honorable Mentions: Team of Ma Chi Fai and Ng Hang U; Team of Kong Ka Cheng and Fan In Kuan; and Team of Lin Zhihang and Hon Kit I.
The winning projects were exhibited at the event and the winners made introductions to the guests.

A delegation of nearly 20 people from the Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations) went to Guangzhou to visit the Guangzhou Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. Fei Chunyan, Division Chief of the Social Work Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, was invited to serve as the Consultant of the delegation. The delegation was cordially received by Chief Engineer Tang Yixing of the Guangzhou Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. The two sides exchanged views on the implementation of the “Guangzhou Nansha General Plan for Comprehensive Cooperation among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau” and the needs and directions of cooperation between Guangzhou and Macau in the field of construction works. Representatives from the District Bureaus of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of Nansha and Huangpu, Guangzhou Construction Industry Federation, Guangzhou Engineering Survey and Design Industry Association and others also joined the meeting.

AAM “2023 World Architecture Day Celebration and Young Architects Design Competition Award Ceremony” took place at Oasis of Galaxy Hotel. A total of more than 80 members, guests and friends participated, and the scene was lively.First, GA President Arch. Ben Leong delivered an opening speech and presented the Outstanding Achievement Award to fellow member Arch. José Floriano Pereira Chan. BD President Arch. Christine Choi delivered a speech introducing the association’s work this year. Then the result of “2023 Young Architects Competition - Pavilions as Urban Place-Maker” was announced and the award ceremony was held. Yang Hao, Deputy Director of the Economy Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR; Leong Iok Sam, Director of Fire Services Bureau; Luís Manuel Silva Madeira de Carvalho, Subdirector of the Public Construction Bureau; and Mak Tat Io, Subdirector of Land and Public Works Bureau were invited to serve as the awarding guests. AAM Fellow Members Council President Arch. Carlos Marreiros issued certificates of appreciation to the competition jury members. At the same event, Arch. Rui Leão, Secretary-General of UIA was invited to make a keynote speech.

The Architects Association of Macau held a seven-day “2023 AAM Architecture Design Exhibition” at Albergue SCM, and the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony of the exhibition was presided over by AAM GA President Ben Leong and BD President Christine Choi. Honorable guests Yang Yi, Devision Head at Department of Economic Affairs at Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the MSAR; Lam Wai Hou, Director of Public Works Bureau; Cheang Kai Meng, Deputy Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Mak Tat Io, Deputy Director of Lands and Urban Construction Bureau; Hoi Kam Un, Department Head from Cultural Development Fund; Wong Pit Wa, Division Head from Municipal Affairs Bureau; as well as the representatives from those associations of Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group were invited to open the exhibition together. AAM then awarded certificates to seven local secondary school students who completed the “Architect Professional Shadowing Program” this year.In addition to the latest design projects of AAM’s members, the exhibits at this architectural exhibition also include the entries of the “2023 Young Architects Architectural Design Competition” and the award-winning works of past young architects design competitions. It was also arranged for the participants of the 2023 Young Architects Architectural Design Competition to introduce their entries to the guests. The exhibition was sponsored by the Macau Cultural Fund.

A group of 13 people from the Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA, APMCCM), visited the Macau Chamber of Commerce and received a warm reception from the President Chui Sai Cheong and Vice President of the Board of the Directors U Kin Cho.
Representative of the Sixth Associations successively communicated and exchanged opinions with the representatives of MCC on issues of concern to the industry, such as training of construction professionals, urban renewal, optimizing the bidding system for public works, improving construction technology, strengthening cooperation with foreign engineers, etc..

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA and APMCCM) hosted the Ceremony of Awarding the Practice Recommendation of “Macau Quantity Surveying Technicians 2022” and Dinner Party at Macau Tower. Arch. Eddie Wong, Supervisory Board President of the Architects Association of Macau, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the Six Associations. Lam Wai Hou, Director of Public Works Bureau, was invited to present practice recommendations to qualified trainees. As distinguished guests, Raimundo Arrais do Rosário, Secretary for Transport and Public Works; Lai Weng Leong, Director of Lands and Urban Construction Bureau; Tam Wai Man, Director of Environmental Protection Bureau; Lam Hin San, Director of Transport Bureau; Pun Wa Kin, Director of Civil Aviation Authority; Lau Wai Meng, Director of Macau Post and Telecommunications Bureau; Arnaldo Ernesto dos Santos, Director of Housing Bureau; Vicente Luís Gracias, Director of Cartography and Cadastre Bureau and so on.
The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group started in 2020 to organize a quantity surveying training course based on Decree No. 74/99/M. It has been held for three times so far, and a total of 95 people with certain qualifications have been trained, providing a certain number of talents in the field of quantity surveying in Macau.

The Architects Association of Macau is honored to invite Professor Wang Shu, Department Chair of the Architecture Department of the China Academy of Art, famous Architect and Pulitzer Prize winner; and his wife Lu Wenyu, partner of the Architect Firm to come to the association for a visit. AAM President of Fellow Members Council Arch. Carlos Marreiros, GA President Arch. Ben Leong, BD President Arch. Christine Choi, BD Vice-President Arch. Donna Wu and etc. received them warmly and had an exchange meeting together. At the meeting, Prof. Wang shared his experience in architectural design and practice for many years. The participants were inspired and benefited a lot. On the same day, AAM organized a group of 25 members to attend the lecture “When Architecture Meets Nature - Aesthetics of Chinese Architecture”, given by Prof. Wang at the Macau Cultural Center to further understand his philosophy and persistence in design. To further promote exchanges with mainland and foreign architectural industries and expand the vision and level of local architects, AAM is planning to organize an architecture tour to Shanghai in the second half of this year and visit Prof. Wang Shu. It is also hoped to promote local architectural design through the visit.

Macau Institution of Engineers and Macau Association of Concrete Inspection, Maintenance and Waterproofing hosted jointly “Technical Seminar and Visit to The Phase 2 of Studio City”, inviting the representatives and members of the Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA, APMCCM) to participate. AAM President of Fellow Members Council Arch. Carlos Marreiros, President of the Members Assembly Arch. Ben Leong, President of the Board of Directors Arch. Christine Choi, Vice-Presidents Arch. Paulo Cheang and Arch. Donna Wu, etc. participated.

AAM general assembly 2022 took place at its premises. GA President Arch. Ben Leong chaired the meeting. The annual activity report and financial report introduced by the Board of Directors was passed after the President of the Supervisory Board Arch. Eddie Wong delivered the supervisory report. Arch. Carlos Marreiros, President of the Fellow Members Council also presented in the Assembly. Amendments to the Constitution were also introduced at the General Assembly and passed unanimously. This revision of the Constitution is to rationalize and expand the number of members in each committee within the existing organizational structure in response to the development of affairs of the association and the actual situation in Macau. In addition, Arch. Ben Leong and Arch. Johnathan Wong were approved to be the AAM fellow members, due to their contribution to the Association and Macau for many years.

The Macau Construction Industry Development Concern Group (the Six Associations: AAM, AEM, AECEM, MABCD, MCA, APMCCM) held a press conference at the premise of Macau Association of Building Constructors and Developers. President of the Board of Directors Arch. Christine Choi represented the Architects Association of Macau to attend. The press conference introduced the impact of the COVID19 epidemic on the construction industry at the end of 2022, as well as called on government projects to appropriately extend the construction period as appropriate, so that other private projects could follow this practice. It is hoped that the end of the epidemic and the opening of the market could attract foreign investment and stimulate the private construction market.
