CPD Seminar 2025
29th March, 2025
With an area of 1.38 square kilometers, New Urban Zone A is the largest reclamation area in Macao’s new districts. As a major component of Eastern District-2 (Zona Leste-2) under the Master Plan of the Macao Special Administrative Region (2020-2040), the zone is primarily designated for green or public open spaces and residential use, envisioned as a coastal urban gateway with comprehensive community facilities and support for small and medium-sized enterprises. Its development represents a major transformation in Macao’s cityscape. Given the growing number of completed and upcoming public construction projects in the area, AAM was honored to organize the “Urban Evolution- A Closer Look at Zone A Public Housing Developments” with the strong support of DSOP. Mr. LAM Wai Hou, Director of DSOP, provided an overview of the zone’s planning and progress, noting that current construction is concentrated in the northern half of Zone A, while the southern half remains under future development. He highlighted that over 20 local architects have contributed to DSOP-led projects in the area and encouraged continued professional engagement to shape Macao’s new urban fabric. Following the briefing, attendees toured completed and near-complete projects—including public housing developments in Plots A2, B9, and B10—guided by the architects behind each project: Arch. CHAN Hou Kuan from ARCO Architecture Design and Consultant Ltd.; Arch. Rui LEÃO from LBA, Arquitectura e Planeamento Lda,; Arch. WONG Chung Yuen from P&T Architects and Engineers Ltd. Macau Branch. The tour provided insights into technical specifications, innovative construction techniques, and sparked lively discussions on the future of public architecture in Zone A and Macao as a whole. Also attending this inspection were government officials including CHEONG Ka Lon, Division Head of DSOP and KUOK Kit Peng, Division Head of Housing Bureau.
